چکیده

[1] ElarmS is a network-based methodology for rapid earthquake detection, location and hazard assessment in the form of magnitude estimation and peak ground motion prediction. The methodology is currently being tested as part of the real-time seismic system in California leveraging the resources of the California Integrated Seismic Network (CISN) and the Advanced National Seismic System. A total of 603 velocity and acceleration sensors at 383 sites across the state stream waveform data to ElarmS processing modules at three network processing centers where waveforms are reduced to a few parameters. These parameters are then collected and processed at UC Berkeley to provide a single statewide prediction of future ground shaking that is updated every second. The system successfully detected the Mw 5.4 Alum Rock earthquake in northern California for which it generated an accurate hazard prediction before peak shaking began in San Francisco. It also detected the Mw 5.4 Chino Hills earthquake in southern California. The median system latency is currently 11.8 sec; the median waveform data latency is 6.5 sec.Citation: Allen, R.M., H. 3. The ElarmS Earthquake Early Warning Methodology and Application across California

Earthquake Alarms Systems, ElarmS, is a methodology for providing warning of forthcoming ground shaking during earthquakes. The approach uses a network of seismic instruments to detect the first-arriving energy at the surface, the P-waves, and translate the information contained in these low amplitude waves into a prediction of the peak ground shaking that follows. The instruments closest to th...

Evaluating and Improving the ElarmS Earthquake Early Warning Algorithm

Earthquake Alarm Systems, or ElarmS, is a network-based earthquake early warning (EEW) system developed in California. This dissertation concerns the transition of ElarmS from research prototype to production-grade code. We test ElarmS' performance for large earthquakes with an extensive dataset of large events from Japan. Using the Japanese dataset and results, we develop a statistical error m...

The potential for earthquake early warning in southern California.

Earthquake mitigation efforts in the United States currently use long-term probabilistic hazard assessments and rapid post-earthquake notification to reduce the potential damage of earthquakes. Here we present the seismological design for and demonstrate the feasibility of a short-term hazard warning system. Using data from past earthquakes, we show that our Earthquake Alarm System (ElarmS) cou...

CISN ShakeAlert – An Earthquake Early Warning Demonstration System for California

To demonstrate the feasibility of earthquake early warning (EEW) in California, we have developed and implemented the CISN ShakeAlert demonstration system. A Decision Module combines estimates and uncertainties determined by three algorithms implemented in parallel, τc-Pd Onsite, Virtual Seismologist, and ElarmS, to calculate and report at a given time the most probable earthquake magnitude and...

Operational real - time GPS - enhanced earthquake early warning

Moment magnitudes for large earthquakes (Mw ≥7.0) derived in real time from near-field seismic data can be underestimated due to instrument limitations, ground tilting, and saturation of frequency/amplitude-magnitude relationships. Real-time high-rate GPS resolves the buildup of static surface displacements with the S wave arrival (assuming nonsupershear rupture), thus enabling the estimation o...
